The Power of Hydrogen

As seen in the photo, the H-bomb is much more dramatic than the explosion of the Hindenburg. When hydrogen was first used to produce "boosting" in an A-bomb, scientists knew they were onto something. The move was made from bombs rated in kilotons to bombs rated in megatons. These bombs made the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs look like childs play and the world has never been the same since.
This was pure energy unleashed.

Production of Hydrogen Gas

The production of hydrogen gas is a simple process, but the results of the chemical combustion of the gas can be dramatic...as seen in the photo above. Though this is not a true explosion with and big boom and concussion wave, the reaction is very quick and quite dramatic. In this particular lab exercise we will produce hydrogen in small amounts and explode the gas as part of the laboratory learning process. The Hindenburg, above, was one of the most dramatic examples of the power and pain of a simple reaction of hydrogen undergoing combustion!!!

About Me!!!!!

Mr. T has been in the educational field since his first assignment in the fall of 1975 at Altus High School, Altus, Arkansas. The last 30 of those years have been with Lavaca High School, Lavaca, Arkansas, USA. Previous to becoming a science teacher I attended various colleges in Ada, Oklahoma, the University of Michigan summer program at the Biological Station at Pellston, Michigan and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas. I retired after 28 years in my current position, but remained on staff as a parttime chemistry teacher.
With all my spare time I enjoy gardening, reading, coin collecting, watching a little of the telly and the occasional nap!!
